This chapter focuses on the accomplishments of Winfield Scott Hancock's Union division, which labored in relative obscurity during the battle of Chancellorsville. Imbued with a sense of work well done, many men in Hancock's division recrossed the Rappahannock nursing bitter feelings toward their commanding general. They had matched the rebels blow for blow in the smoke-filled woods, and they believed Hooker's errors alone had permitted Lee to exert his dominance.
