This chapter analyzes the delivery of medical care to the wounded of both armies, thus picking up the story of Chancellorsville where most other historians have left off. Thousands of men endured great suffering in springless ambulances or languished without attention for prolonged periods; once in the apparent safety of field hospitals, they encountered surgeons overwhelmed by the scale of the slaughter, often lacking adequate supplies of drugs and bandages, and helpless to mend much of the human wreckage that jammed their operating tables.
