This chapter describes Thomas Nast's conflict with editor George William Curtis and how it destroyed Nast's relationship with the Harper's Weekly and with the Harper family. The fight between Nast and Curtis had its roots in both personal and professional differences. Curtis found Nast's cartoons offensive and Curtis felt that his editorials ought to set the paper's policy and Nast should draw cartoons in conjunction with that policy.
