This chapter explores the experiences of African American military laborers and soldiers in the Union army during the Civil War. Letters and testimonials written by black soldiers to the government are among the earliest of the many consciously political acts by African Americans who sought access to health care. In return for their military service, they expected decent medical care for themselves and their families.
