This chapter describes the retreat of the Federal troops. The Army of the Potomac had lost another battle, and the campaign had failed. Burnside's army had not been destroyed, but it had been whipped, every assault repulsed. Whole brigades had been shattered, and in the end the places of heroic sacrifice had been abandoned to the enemy.
