During the end of their period at Belleville, Angelina suffered periods of illness and Sarah did too. Early in 1853 the Welds were invited to join Raritan Bay Union, a newly formed cooperative community. Weld was offered the job of Director of the community's school. Like most utopian cooperatives this one promised to be more than just a place to live. Despite the increasing threat of disunion and war, the years at Raritan Bay Union were rich and fulfilling.
