This chapter describes the successful Confederate assault at Devil's Den, “one of the wildest, fiercest struggles of the war.” Hood's division outflanked and outgunned Sickles' advanced line at Devil's Den before it could be reinforced enough to make its position tenable. The hard fighting in Devil's Den, together with the sinister character of the spot, gave it a hallowed place in America's history that might even exceed its actual significance.
