This chapter describes how the Culp's Hill fight was a disaster for the Army of Northern Virginia. Its casualties far exceeded the 1,823 reported for Johnson's division, and nothing was gained. When the fighting ended late on the morning of 3 July, the Union line was intact and held more strongly than before. Further, the fight had contributed little, if anything, to Confederate efforts elsewhere on the field.
