Administering the Western Conquests
As the war progressed and the Union army continued to advance, it became increasingly important for the Federals to address the problems associated with administering the conquered territory. This chapter discusses the problems associated with administering the Union's western conquests. One of the chief problems was protecting supply lines to the front and keeping open the navigation of the Mississippi River to civilian commerce.
