Humor in Politics
Humor in Politics
This chapter discusses Senator Joseph T. Robinson's statement at Charlotte at the time when he was the Democratic nominee for vice-president in 1928. “Politics is not a vocation,” he said. “It is not even an avocation. It's an incurable disease. If it ever gets in one's blood, it can never be eradicated.” The author was born to a family whose blood had been corrupted by politics. His forebears had been immersed in law and politics for generations. The author confesses here that he finds genealogy a fascinating subject. It teaches the truth that William Cullen Bryant enunciates in his poem “Thanatopsis,” namely, that they who tread the globe are but a handful to the tribes who slumber in its bosom.
