After more than twenty years of marriage, Jane Grey Swisshelm left her husband after finding herself desperately unhappy with her marriage. Her husband and his family constantly campaigned to convince her to convert to Methodism but Jane did not concede in giving up her Covenanter beliefs. This chapter discusses the factors that prompted Jane to begin thinking in a systematic way about the general condition of married women in America.
