The graves at Arlington and the freedom celebrations in southern towns reflect the relative positions of power of white rebels and African Americans. Reconciliation had been achieved around the turn of the century. While some of this was affected by racism and comradeship, there was also a political rationale at work. This chapter presents the details of this story through the evolution of Arlington Cemetery as it changed from a place of sectional rancor to a site of sectional healing.
