This part of the book presents the first half of the anthology of letters written by German immigrants in the United States to friends and family in Germany during the American Civil War. Within this section, writers are arranged in roughly chronological order since many had no firm geographic base. It includes the writings of soldiers and civilians, both men and women, from the north and the south.
