Abstract
This chapter examines the efforts of African Americans in Philadelphia to end segregation in the Philadelphia Transportation Company (PTC) during the first half of the twentieth century. It shows how the PTC's rank-and-file black workers campaigned against racial discrimination in the company by staging protests, and how their white counterparts reacted to this activism. The chapter also considers the support of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Fair Employment Practices Committee, and the Transport Workers Union for the black cause.
