Love and Death at Monticello
Love and Death at Monticello
Martha Jefferson Randolph was born on September 27, 1772. Martha, who became known as “Patsy,” enjoyed a privileged life as a member of Virginia's gentry elite. She spent most of her first decade at Monticello, her father's house in Albermale. Love and death together marked the years of Patsy's infancy and early childhood. In 1773, Patsy's grandfather, John Wayles, died. The next year brought the death of Jefferson's sister Elizabeth. In April 1774, Martha Jefferson gave birth to a second daughter, Jane, who died in October 1775. The death of Jane Randolph Jefferson, Patsy's paternal grandmother, followed five months later.
