It should be acknowledged that the revolution addressed the historical sources of Cuban discontent and offered a remedy to age-old grievances. However, the revolution stood as a demonstration of what was possible in Cuba for Cubans. In was therefor, this chapter argues, a validation of what was possible. The realization of national sovereignty and exercise of self-determination could enable Cubans to shape the forces that governed their lives. For many Cubans, the triumph of the revolution was received with a sense of completion. Cuba had challenged a government based on force and violence and prevailed. This triumph signalled an appropriation of history.
