Contests for Control
In 1851 a Spanish Dominican priest, José Sadoc Alemany, accepted the new bishopric in America. This chapter narrates his actions over the next several years. Once nuns entered into his jurisdiction, he tightened his hand over them, placing them in remote California towns, bonding them to his administration through debt, and forbidding travel that would take a nun back to her birth country or original motherhouse.
