This text contains the life story of Elizabeth Keckley. She was born in the early nineteenth century. She experienced harsh treatment under slavery. She managed to raise money through loans from customers from her dressmaking activities to purchase freedom for herself and her son. She moved to Washington D.C. and set up a dressmaking shop. This is where she encountered Mary Todd Lincoln. This book was published partly to raise funds for Mrs Lincoln and to counter criticism of her. The reaction to the book was extremely negative and her business floundered.
