The first literacy goal in Mays' family was for him to be able to read the Bible. In the evangelical Christian tradition, all saved people were required to be conversant in the Bible. This chapter discusses Mays' struggles in pursuing formal education. Mays was unaware in his youth that his quest to be educated was a part of a much larger black intellectual tradition, a “Bible politics of literacy,” found in the rebelliousness of slave religion.
