James Madison remained single into middle age, and almost no evidence exists of romance in his earlier years. This chapter explores Madison's relationships in his later years, beginning with his brief engagement to and separation from Kitty Floyd and then his marriage to Dolley Payne. It also describes how Dolley Madison became an enormous asset personally and politically to her husband. Dolley used her charm and connections to raise money for worthy causes, including the Lewis and Clark expedition and to promote bipartisanship and national unity.
