A World in Need of Improvement

(p.133) Chapter Six A World in Need of Improvement
Jane Grey Swisshelm

Sylvia D. Hoffert

University of North Carolina Press

This chapter examines Jane as an advocate of temperance, abolition, and women's rights and explores the contradictions and tensions that she exposed in her pursuit of social reform. In her pursuit of social justice, Jane Grey Swisshelm was determined to continue her fight against slavery and capital punishment and promoted the interests of women. Despite dedicating her life trying to improve society, she was never a part of the inner circle of reformers because she was not temperamentally suited to the kind of collaboration and cooperation that belonging to an organization demanded.
