The Infantry
This chapter defines the term “infantry,” which in military parlance was designated the “queen of battle.” This was exactly true in the case of Lee's army. Throughout the war, the infantry carried the fight to the Federals and bore the brunt of the Union onslaught. Time and again, infantrymen proportionately suffered the heaviest losses and inflicted the vast majority of enemy casualties. The infantry comprised almost 82 percent of the manpower strength in Lee's army. While data about the experiences of cavalrymen and artillerymen often varied from that of the army overall, infantrymen so dominated the makeup of the army that the statistics for their branch largely dictated the data for the entire army.
