The Peninsula Campaign provides the only example of the connection between war and slavery. During the Civil War, Northerners were shocked to hear reports of slaves fighting alongside their masters. In order to understand the choices made by African Americans at the start of the Civil War, this chapter presents a brief overview of the historic relationship between war and slavery. It also demonstrates that it should not be surprising to find slaves willingly or unwillingly fighting alongside their owners.
