Gay Deceibers and Bonnie Blue Flags
The Anthems of the Confederacy
Northerners were content with patriotic songs, but Confederates sought anthems. This chapter describes the chosen anthems of the Confederacy. The first anthem widely adopted by Confederates was “Dixie”. Its inclusion in the Jefferson Davis's inauguration in Montgomery on February 18, 1861 completed the song's transformation into the Confederacy's national anthem. However, “Dixie” was not the Confederacy's sole anthem. The Confederates embraced another song that enjoyed continuous popularity similar to “Dixie”: “The Bonnie Blue Flag.”
