The antislavery propaganda of abolitionists started in the early 1830s, but it was in the 1850s that a profound change in Northern attitudes about slavery, print and law took place. This chapter examines how antebellum abolitionists accomplished a radical transformation in public views about slavery, print, law, and antislavery agitation. Turning to their own civil liberties of freedom of speech and due process, the antislavery movement deployed print tactics of organized abolitionism to decriminalize antislavery agitation in the court of public opinion.
