This chapter discusses how in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, the dead became a divisive force, pitting former Confederates against Yankees, black southerners against white southerners, in a battle over the disposition and treatment of the 620,000 men who lost their lives in the conflict. Efforts by the US government to provide proper burials for the Union dead prompted former Confederates to complain that their slain men were being dishonored.
