This introductory chapter begins with a brief discussion of how lawyers throughout much of Europe greatly expanded their sphere of influence during the long nineteenth century. It then sets out the book's purpose, which is to provide an understanding of how an Old Regime profession gained renewed prominence and flourished in the modern age, with a focus on Barcelona. This is followed by a capsule history of Barcelona and some background on Catalan nationalism.
