The Modern Profession Old Regime and Enlightenment

(p.28) 2 The Modern Profession Old Regime and Enlightenment
Catalonia's Advocates

Stephen Jacobson

University of North Carolina Press

This chapter examines the rise of the modern profession during the Enlightenment. It first reviews the doldrums in which the bar found itself at midcentury, when it was at its historical nadir. In order to understand the direction in which the bar was heading, it is necessary to examine from where it came. The discussions then turn to the characteristics of legal practice, the reception of a modern professional ethic, and the influence of the Enlightenment on juridical culture.
