This chapter discusses the rise of the conservative profession. It demonstrates how a conservative leadership: built corporate associations; resurrected the humanist heritage of the bar; defended the legal tradition from legislative intrusion; and articulated a historical memory that anchored the origins of the bar in the Middle Ages and Rome.
