The Tropicalist Moment
The Tropicalist Moment
Glauber Rocha's film Terra em transe (Land in anguish) critically portrays the position of left-wing artists and intellectuals under a right-wing military dictatorship in Brazil. Representing a “traumatic moment” for left-wing artists, it created the conditions for the elaboration of “tropicalismo.” This chapter discusses the cultural manifestation associated with Tropicália, and the significant impact of Rocha's film and theater productions on the advent of the tropicalist movement. It also explores the collective tropicalist “concept album” from 1968, the question of allegory in Tropicália, political violence, and affirmation of marginality in tropicalist songs.
