What Is Veiling?

Sahar Amer

University of North Carolina Press

This book has examined veiling among Muslim women and the heterogeneous voices of Muslim women who veil, as well as of those who choose not to veil. It has discussed various reasons—historical, geographic, social, political, spiritual, economic, feminist, personal, and cultural—that help explain why a Muslim woman dons a hijab. At the same time, it has challenged common perceptions of veiling practices and many stereotypes of Muslim women. The book has also shown how European colonizers promoted the perception that Muslim veiling signifies the oppression of women and the backwardness of Islam. Finally, it argues that veiling is a complex human rights issue rather than a simplistic debate over emancipation versus repression.

Keywords:   veiling, Muslim women, hijab, stereotypes, oppression, Islam, human rights
