Tensions in Haiti and Jamaica exploded in the middle of the nineteenth century, with simultaneous outbreaks in northern Haiti and the Morant Bay Rebellion in Jamaica. This chapter focuses on these events. The separate crises were connected in the minds of diplomats, foreigners, and local elites, particularly in Jamaica. Central to their fears were the Haitians in Jamaica. The chapter focuses on key figures and families with ties to Haitian refugees and the ways their strength was exhibited in the political events that followed.
