Sitcom Sovereignty in Mixed Blessings

Sitcom Sovereignty in Mixed Blessings

(p.139) Chapter Four Sitcom Sovereignty in Mixed Blessings
Tribal Televisions

Dustin Tahmahkera

University of North Carolina Press

This chapter focuses on the indigenous and intercultural family sitcom Mixed Blessings, created by Drew Hayden Taylor in 2006. With Mixed Blessings, Taylor expanded the indigenous sitcom tribalography through a genre historically and contemporarily unaccustomed to Native humor and existence of recognizably Native characters. Unlike King of the Hill's John Redcorn, Mixed Blessings features five regular indigenous characters along with additional guest Native characters whose active presence provide an array of recognizably Native sensibilities and possibilities.
