Pressure on Largo Caballero Mounts
Pressure on Largo Caballero Mounts
This chapter covers the mounting Communist pressure on Largo Caballero in the months preceding his May 1937 dismissal from office. Outside the Rosenberg incident, the Communists also sought other ways of politically undermining Largo Caballero's position—the most notorious of which being a scathing invective against Largo Caballero published in the Anarchist newspaper Nosotros, which drove him to retaliate by suspending its publication. In addition, the chapter also gives an account of the only available testimony of a purported behind-the-scenes disagreement with a Moscow delegation over the proposed ousting of Largo Caballero in March 1937. The chapter notes, however, that there are glaring inconsistencies in this account.
