This chapter examines the denouement of the Catalan battle in Negrín's flight from Toulouse, France to Alicarte, to emphasize the need for continued resistance. Not many in his cabinet would respond favorably to Negrín's attempts, due to the general sense of futility with regard to any further resistance in the conflict. The mood of the army generals in the central-southern zone was no less defeatist. Moreover, Communist influence in the area was waning, even before the fall of Catalonia. This backdrop of political decline and dissolution, as well as later events such as the international recognition of new Franco administration as the sovereign government of Spain and Azaña's resignation, would provide the context for further demoralization among the opposing side, and discourage further attempts at implementing the resistance policy.
