This chapter focuses on the medicalization and feminization of Protestant missions in India during from the latter half of the nineteenth century through the early decades of the twentieth. It situates these processes in relation to women's entry into medicine in the United States, the leadership of U.S. missions in medicine, shifts in the Christian and colonial "civilizing mission" on the subcontinent, the role of the "woman question" in the continued colonization of India, and the emergence of an elite Indian middle class. The chapter focuses on Ida Sophia Scudder's establishment of the Vellore Christian Medical College and the intersections between the "woman question" and "woman's work for woman."
