Transit—When Sufis Meet Shiʿis
Transit—When Sufis Meet Shiʿis
Siraj Awrangabadi and Mah Laqa Bai share much in common through literature, performance, and sublimation of erotic desires. But they differ in terms of sectarian allegiance. This chapter discusses the historical and theological commonalities between Sufi interpretations of Sunni allegiance, and vernacular Indian interpretations of Shi`i allegiance. Analyzing the devotional topography of the Deccan, the chapter argues that in this region, these separate, sectarian allegiances converged more than they diverged, despite warfare between the Shi`i Qutb-Shahi kings and the Sunni Mughal emperors.
