(p.99) 12 Reunion

Lisa Yarger

University of North Carolina Press

Lovie and the narrator travel together to Nash County for Lovie’s annual family reunion and pig-pickin’. Lovie recounts stories of her Civil War-era ancestors, including a preacher who practiced his sermons on his mules and a beautiful great-aunt who walked some thirty miles alone to beg a Federal officer to return the mules he’d taken from her farm. As Lovie and the narrator drive through Wilson, Lovie recounts her experiences in “the big town” as a girl. The reader meets a number of Lovie’s relatives, including her sister Octavia Bowman and her niece and nephew, and experiences Lovie as a stand-out character even within her own family.
