The narrator enjoys a goose egg for breakfast and makes rubbery peanut brittle while Lovie reminisces about the dynamics of her marriage. This chapter explores how Lovie could never be persuaded to remarry despite her belief that the man should be head of the household. The narrator gets stir-crazy and begins to think she and Lovie will never hear from Joy. Lovie's youngest daughter, Missy Shelton Sutton, drops in and recounts Lovie's behavior when she (Missy) had her first baby. The story of the accident that left Lovie's younger son Wesley Shelton in a wheelchair also unfolds in this chapter.
