(p.250) 29 Pushing

Lisa Yarger

University of North Carolina Press

In this chapter Lovie explains what a woman can expect during the pushing phase. Joy requests a prayer, which Lovie leads. Joy labors on her back and also in the left lateral position, a position Lovie learned to deliver in in Scotland. Lovie maintains her calm while Joy expresses increasing concern about the difficulty of her labor compared to her previous three. After about three hours of pushing, the baby's head finally emerges, with the umbilical cord wrapped around its neck.
