Lovie describes the “high” she goes on after a birth and the close relationship she develops with the families she serves. Back at her house, Lovie and the narrator find that one of her geese has been hit by a car and is badly injured. Lovie confides to the narrator that Eli had been in the posterior position, which complicates labor and causes “misdirected force.” Lovie and the narrator discuss whether or not she should have shared this information with Joy during the birth.

Keywords:   relationships, posterior position, misdirected force
