Joe Richman and his Radio Diaries team make a lot of compelling, mostly un-narrated historical documentaries, but Joe first became known as the master of the “radio diary.” He gives people recorders and asks them to tape themselves as they go about their lives, talk with their friends or lovers, or sit on the bed at the end of the day and think out loud. Joe receives these recordings and crafts some of public radio’s most memorable portraits. In thumbnail descriptions his characters may sound like victims: the teenager with Tourette’s, the young woman dying of cystic fibrosis, the South African HIV sufferer. But thanks to Joe, millions of NPR listeners have come to know people like Josh Cutler, Laura Rothenberg, and Thembi Ngubane as flesh-and-blood forces of nature.
