Embattled Freedom

University of North Carolina Press

This interlude takes readers back in time to Eliza Bogan’s life in slavery. It begins in North Carolina, where she was born and where her owner was once accused of excessive violence against enslaved people. It then follows her as she was forced by that same owner to migrate west into the cotton-growing regions of Arkansas. There she worked as a field hand on a cotton plantation, while experiencing the death of one husband and her forced separation from another. A mother of seven children by the time the war came, Eliza Bogan greeted the arrival of Union troops with a determination to fight back in order to protect her family.
